My take: The Recipe Box is about a young pastry chef who leaves her job in New York when she can’t stand to work for her obnoxious boss one more second. She heads home to Michigan and her family’s orchard/pie shop where her mom and grandma will give her some much-needed TLC.
It’s a story about family, tradition, and learning to trust – yourself and others. Scattered throughout are scrumptious sounding recipes for various baked goods featured in the novel. I plan to try some so this book will go on my cookbook shelf next to my own family cookbook. Recommended to fans of charming, uplifting novels and foodie fiction.
About the author:
Viola Shipman is a pen name for Wade Rouse, a popular, award-winning memoirist. Rouse chose his grandmother’s name to honor the woman whose heirlooms and family stories inspire his fiction. My take: Lisa Daily’s novel had me from the first page as Alex found out something about her husband that everyone else seemed to know or suspect. She moves through the expected emotions that someone in her position would experience in amazingly good humor – but she must because she has to continue to live, work, and hopefully move forward in her personal life. To that end, Alex’s friends encourage her to jump back into the dating pool which produces some very funny and some cringe-worthy results. I loved Alex and loved getting back to the novel each time I picked it up. With its short chapters, endearing main character, and a beach town setting I’ll just say if you’re looking for a light and entertaining novel to read you should pick up a copy of Single-Minded.

My take: The Book of Summer is the story of a summer home situated on a Nantucket bluff. The bluff is threatened by erosion and the future of the home is bleak. Bess, daughter of the current resident, returns to the island to help her mother pack up and move before the house falls into the sea.
With the help of a guest book (named The Book of Summer) from the days of Bess’s great-grandmother’s time at the house she revisits her past and that of the generations before her. Most of the novel concentrates on the 1940s and present day. Bess can learn some important lessons from the people who wrote in the book – especially the strong women who faced many challenges head-on.
Michelle Gable’s novel is immensely entertaining – perfect for a summer read. Recommended to fans of family dramas and a Nantucket setting.

My take: I’m a fan of novels with a dose of magical realism – think Sarah Addison Allen (one of my favorite authors). Let me tell you how happy I was to receive this book in the mail. Rachel doesn’t know where she’s going but when she ends up running out of gas in Nowhere, North Carolina she meets some interesting people.
One of those people is Catch who offers Rachel a place to stay for as long as she’d like. Catch is in her seventies and kind of cantankerous – in a charming kind of way, ha. She also possesses an ability to make secrets stay secret. So she understands how difficult it can be for Rachel who doesn’t want her own special ability.
This novel is full of interesting characters. Some are sweet, some downright rude and insensitive, and some just want to live a regular life. Rachel hopes to figure out how to fix or make peace with things that have happened. I enjoyed it all.
The Secret Ingredient of Wishes charmed me and I look forward to reading more of Susan Bishop Crispell’s books. And now I want some pie – love that book cover!

My take: I really enjoyed this charming novel. Being from Wisconsin I know a little about the North Woods and small towns and the people who live there. Lily is a city girl from Chicago so she’s not sure what to make of the people she meets when she arrives in Minnow Bay. And she really doesn’t know what to make of the guy she married on a whim ten years earlier (and then didn’t see for ten years).
Lily learns a lot about herself during her time in Minnow Bay. She becomes friends with the innkeeper and the art gallery owner – two people who show her that kindness exists in the world. She discovers an inner strength that will propel her into the next phase of her life – and that’s a good thing. I liked watching her finally stand up for herself and get the satisfaction that comes with it.
This is a feel-good story that had me smiling as I turned the last page. It reminded me a bit of the tv show Northern Exposure and I thought Minnow Bay had a Stars Hollow vibe (for all you Gilmore Girls fans out there). I liked it all and recommend it to anyone looking for a fun read this summer.

When a valuable genetically altered sheep mysteriously goes missing, Keane is the one they call. But while Keane and his more grounded partner, Blake Fowler, are on the trail of the lost sheep, they land an even bigger case. Beautiful television star Priya Mistry suspects that someone is trying to kill her, and she wants Keane to find out who. Pray vanishes, but soon returns, with no memory of having hired them. Keane and Fowler unravel the threads of the mystery, and it soon becomes clear that the two cases are linked – and both point to a sinister conspiracy involving the most powerful people in the city. Saving Priya and the sheep will take all of Keane’s wits and Fowler’s skills, but in the end, they may discover that some secrets are better left hidden.
About the author:
Robert Kroese honed his sense of irony growing up in Grand Rapids, Michigan. After barely graduating from Calvin College, he stumbled into software development. In 2009, he called upon his extensive knowledge of useless information and love of explosions to write his first novel, Mercury Falls. He has written three more books in the Mercury series and a humorous epic fantasy, Disenchanted. The Big Sheep is probably something like Kroese’s eleventh book, but there’s no way to know for certain.
