Blog Tour/US Giveaway: Redemption Bay by RaeAnne Thayne

A young mayor will do anything to save her town, even if it means welcoming back the man she blames for almost destroying it in REDEMPTION BAY (HQN Books, July 2015, $7.99 U.S./$8.99 CAN.), the second book in New York Times and USA TODAY bestselling author RaeAnne Thayne’s enthralling Haven Point series.

RedemptionBay_Cover

Synopsis:  McKenzie Shaw would do anything for her hometown of Haven Point. It may be small, but it’s never let her down…unlike gorgeous, infuriating Ben Kilpatrick.

Ben was her childhood hero until he closed his family’s boat factory, leaving the town’s economy in shambles.

But now his tech firm is considering opening a local facility. Her natural instinct, fueled by all these years of resentment, is to fight him at every turn. For Haven Point’s sake, however, McKenzie must grit her teeth and be as welcoming as she can manage—a task further complicated by her fierce attraction to Ben and her discovery that he is renting the lake house next door to hers.

For Ben, being back in Haven Point evokes all the dark and ugly memories of his childhood. What could a town filled with painful memories ever offer him? Yet seeing Haven Point through the eyes of McKenzie—its fiery young mayor—he suddenly has his answer. If only he can resolve the animosity crackling between them, Ben may have found the place where he can build ties and find healing…a place where love arrives when it’s least expected.

My take:  RaeAnne Thayne has quickly gone to the top of my auto-read authors list. She writes about small towns and the people who live there with such a clear, true voice that I find her books immensely enjoyable.

Redemption Bay is the story of Ben and Mackenzie. They knew each other when they were younger but now they’re in their 30s and have followed different paths. Ben is an executive in a tech company who is back in town to scout sites for a possible division of the company. Mackenzie is the mayor of Haven Point and knows what the location of the company could mean for her town. She has to get over her possible misconceptions of the type of man Ben has become and try to convince him that Haven Point is the perfect place for his company. Ben needs to come to terms with his painful past and be open to hearing explanations from people who matter.

I thought Thayne did a good job of developing the relationship between Ben and Mackenzie. She also brought unexpected drama to the story near the end that kept me turning the pages. I recommend this addition to the Haven Point series and can’t wait to read the next book. Fans of RaeAnne Thayne and the Haven Point series won’t be disappointed.

Finding Glory by Sara Arden

  • Finding Glory (May26)Title:  Finding Glory
  • Series:  Home to Glory #3
  • Author:  Sara Arden
  • Genre:  Contemporary Romance
  • Published:  May 2015 – HQN
  • Source:  Publisher

My take:  Finding Glory is the third book in the Home to Glory series but it can definitely stand on its own. Gina and Reed knew each other quite well as children but then life took them in different directions. Before doing that though, Reed and Gina’s sister Crystal had a relationship that was rooted in their drug addiction. Reed was able to break free but Crystal couldn’t and then became even more ill before dying. Unbeknownst to Reed, he had fathered a child with Crystal. When he hears the news he returns to Glory, Kansas to meet his daughter Amanda Jane who now lives with her aunt Gina.

Growing up Gina had hoped Reed would notice her as more than a friend but, instead, he was drawn to her sister Crystal. When Gina’s mom died from cancer she shouldered the responsibility of caring for Crystal and then Amanda Jane. When Reed finds a way for them both to raise Amanda Jane, Gina can’t help but worry that she and Amanda Jane will be let down by him.

Thrown together so quickly they all have to learn to live as a family. There are growing pains all around but you’ll have to read the book to see if they can find glory in their new life. Although I found some of the circumstances over-the-top, I still thought Finding Glory was a good addition to the series. Recommended to fans of small town, contemporary romance.

Hold Me by Susan Mallery

  • Hold Me (April28)Title:  Hold Me
  • Series:  Fool’s Gold #16
  • Author:  Susan Mallery
  • Genre:  Contemporary Romance
  • Published:  April 28, 2015 – HQN Books
  • Source:  Publisher

My take:  Destiny Mills is in Fool’s Gold for the summer. She works for a company that provides software to search and rescue departments in the US and Canada. The mayor of Fool’s Gold hired her to work with the local S&R team.

Kipling Gilmore was a world-class skier until an accident changed his life. He’s lucky to be alive much less able to walk. The mayor hired him to head up the S&R team in Fool’s Gold.

Both Destiny and Kipling had less than desirable upbringings. Destiny’s parents are country music stars who divorced after a tumultuous marriage. Both went on to have several partners resulting in more children. Until their divorce and Destiny (age 10 at the time) went to live with her grandmother she’d never felt secure, much less loved. Kipling was raised with a violent father who said all the right words but his actions said other. He was able to leave that life when he moved in with his ski coach and family but he felt guilty leaving his sister to bear the brunt of their father’s anger. It’s no wonder neither Destiny nor Kipling think they can have a normal relationship – they don’t think they are capable because it was never modeled by the adults in their lives.

These two had a lot to overcome. Being a romance novel the reader knows there will be a happy ending. I have to say while I really liked the main storyline of Hold Me I found the secondary plots almost silly. But, this a series I enjoy so I’ll continue to read the books as they are published. I’m hooked. I recommend this book to fans of the Fool’s Gold series, small town romance, and Susan Mallery.

The Marriage Charm by Linda Lael Miller

  • the marriage charm (Jan27)Title:  The Marriage Charm
  • Series:  The Brides of Bliss County #2
  • Author:  Linda Lael Miller
  • Genre:  Contemporary Romance
  • Pub. Date:  Jan. 27, 2015 – HQN Books
  • Source:  Publisher

Synopsis:  The women of Bliss County have a pact—to find husbands. The right husbands.

One already has: Hadleigh Stevens, who married rancher Tripp Galloway a few months ago. Now Melody Nolan thinks it’s her turn. Melody has recently found success as a jewelry designer, and her work is the focus of her life. She’s not exactly unhappy, but she wants more. She’s always been attracted to Spence Hogan, the local chief of police, but she’s convinced that Spence, a notorious charmer, isn’t what you’d call husband material.

Spence is a good cop who isn’t scared of anything—except love. And he’s done everything he can to preserve his reputation as a womanizer—a reputation that keeps marriage-minded women, including Melody, at bay. And yet…there’s something about Melody he can’t forget. Something his heart can’t ignore.  (publisher)

My take: It’s been a while since I’ve read one of Linda Lael Miller’s books. The Marriage Charm reminded me why I enjoy her romances.  The characters are regular people and they deal with fairly normal life situations.

You can tell Miller knows her setting – the descriptions of small towns and rural mountain areas made me feel like I was right there. There’s a bit of mystery and drama in the crime Spence is trying to solve that involves many of the town’s citizens.

It all added up to an enjoyable way to spend a few hours reading. I’ll probably go back and read the first book (The Marriage Pact) in the series and look forward to reading the next.

Treadmill Reads: Somebody to Love by Kristan Higgins

somebody to love

Synopsis (Publisher):  After her father loses the family fortune in an insider-trading scheme, single mom Parker Welles is faced with some hard decisions. First order of business: go to Gideon’s Cove, Maine to sell the only thing she now owns—a decrepit house in need of some serious flipping. When her father’s wingman, James Cahill, asks to go with her, she’s not thrilled…even if he is fairly gorgeous and knows his way around a toolbox.
Having to fend for herself financially for the first time in her life, Parker signs on as a florist’s assistant and starts to find out who she really is. Maybe James isn’t the glib lawyer she always thought he was. And maybe the house isn’t the only thing that needs a little TLC…

My take:  Kristan Higgins did it again. She managed to make me laugh out loud one minute and the next minute was pulling the old heartstrings.  I loved the story of Parker and James and how they learned that sometimes you have to ask for a second chance and sometimes you have to give one. A sweet story that has me checking my shelves for another Kristan Higgins novel. Reading Somebody to Love made my treadmill time a breeze!
