The Newcomer

The Newcomer by Mary Kay Andrews

Description:

In trouble and on the run…

After she discovers her sister Tanya dead on the floor of her fashionable New York City townhouse, Letty Carnahan is certain she knows who did it: Tanya’s ex; sleazy real estate entrepreneur Evan Wingfield. Even in the grip of grief and panic Letty heeds her late sister’s warnings: “If anything bad happens to me—it’s Evan. Promise me you’ll take Maya and run. Promise me.”

With a trunkful of emotional baggage…

So Letty grabs her sister’s Mercedes and hits the road with her wailing four-year-old niece Maya. Letty is determined to out-run Evan and the law, but run to where? Tanya, a woman with a past shrouded in secrets, left behind a “go-bag” of cash and a big honking diamond ring—but only one clue: a faded magazine story about a sleepy mom-and-pop motel in a Florida beach town with the improbable name of Treasure Island. She sheds her old life and checks into an uncertain future at The Murmuring Surf Motel.

The No Vacancy sign is flashing & the sharks are circling…

And that’s the good news. Because The Surf, as the regulars call it, is the winter home of a close-knit flock of retirees and snowbirds who regard this odd-duck newcomer with suspicion and down-right hostility. As Letty settles into the motel’s former storage room, she tries to heal Maya’s heartache and unravel the key to her sister’s shady past, all while dodging the attention of the owner’s dangerously attractive son Joe, who just happens to be a local police detective. Can Letty find romance as well as a room at the inn—or will Joe betray her secrets and put her behind bars? With danger closing in, it’s a race to find the truth and right the wrongs of the past.

My take:

If it’s spring, it’s time for a new Mary Kay Andrews novel – and I never hesitate to read it because I know I’ll be entertained. The Newcomer didn’t disappoint. Letty is on the run with her young niece after finding her sister dead in her home. She can’t let her sister’s ex find her or little Maya. He’s so determined to find Letty and the girl that he puts a bounty out on her. Luck is with them when they find the little beach side motel that Letty’s sister somehow had a connection with. Letty’s world opens up a little with the people who stay there and the family who own the place. I could totally picture the setting, the quirky (some might say cranky) characters, and the handsome cop who might just be able to help Letty. This is just the type of book I love to read at this time of year – whether I’m at the beach or just want to feel like I am. It was a fun read!

Gone Too Far

Gone Too Far by Debra Webb

Expected publication:  April 27, 2021 – Thomas & Mercer

E-galley courtesy of the publisher and NetGalley

Description:

This second entry in USA Today bestselling author Debra Webb’s Devlin & Falco series proves that sometimes the past is best left forgotten.

As veteran detectives of the Birmingham Police Department, Kerri Devlin and Luke Falco have seen it all. So when the city’s new hotshot deputy district attorney turns up dead as part of a double homicide, the partners immediately get to work.

But this is no ordinary case. Devlin and Falco quickly link the murdered DDA to one of their own: former BPD detective Sadie Cross. But Sadie’s fractured memory is yet another puzzle to decipher, as she only recalls bits and pieces of her violent past…a past that may hold clues to the motive behind the murders.

As the group slowly begins to unearth the truth, they soon discover that the more secrets are revealed, the more fatal the consequences. (publisher)

My take:  I found Debra Webb’s books a couple of years ago and quickly became a fan. I love her fast-paced crime thrillers. Her characters are magnetic, engaging and easy to cheer for. As expected, Gone Too Far was a good follow-up for the detective team of Kerri Devlin and Luke Falco. This time the pair find themselves tasked with solving more than one case. Things get really tense when someone close to Kerri and Falco becomes involved. A great addition to the cast is Sadie Cross. What a complex character! If twists and unexpected turns are your thing you won’t be disappointed with this book. My only disappointment was that the end arrived too soon. I hope Debra Webb has more in store for this team!

Picnic in Someday Valley

Picnic in Someday Valley by Jodi Thomas

Published:  April 2021 – Kensington

E-galley courtesy of the publisher and NetGalley

Description:

Marcie Latimer longs to run away from Someday Valley–especially since her ex-boyfriend spun a web of lies that almost led to tragedy in neighboring Honey Creek. Little wonder so many locals have turned their backs on her. But not Brand Rodgers. The quiet cowboy comes to listen every time she sings at Bandit’s Bar, offering a glimpse of safety and calm that Marcie’s rarely known.

After Texas Ranger Colby McBride saved Honey Creek’s mayor, Piper Mackenzie, from a fire, she claimed him with a kiss. That was five months ago, and Colby still isn’t sure where they’re headed. Piper loves her town–but does she love Colby? And is he even ready for what comes next?

Pecos Smith, Honey Creek’s emergency dispatcher, is grateful to have a new bride he adores and a baby on the way–even if one vital piece of the puzzle is missing. But as trouble comes stalking through the valley, lives will cross surprising paths. And Marcie, who’s always felt that a forever love was out of reach, might discover that Someday is the perfect place to find it…  (publisher)

My take:

Book two in the Honey Creek series, Picnic in Someday Valley, takes place in both Honey Creek and the next town over, Someday Valley, Texas. There are several returning characters from the previous book, something I always enjoy. That said, this book could stand alone – but I recommend you read the first book!

Marci was a duped girlfriend in the previous book. She’d like a fresh start but doesn’t expect forgiveness or understanding from people her ex hurt. For some reason a mystery cowboy keeps turning up in her life. What will it take for him to figure out she’s no good?

A widowed father of three can’t seem to get the local baker off his mind. Her hands are filled with work and raising her delinquent fifteen-year-old sister. She doesn’t have time for love!

The mayor and her Ranger are experiencing troubled waters in the early days of their long-distance relationship. When will he figure out she’s a strong, independent woman and doesn’t need him to rescue her? Or does she?

Jodi Thomas packed all this and more into her entertaining novel. I loved it all and recommend to fans of contemporary romance, small town settings, just enough drama, and characters you can cheer for.

Promises to Keep (Review and US Giveaway)

Promises to Keep by Nan Rossiter

Publication date:  April 27, 2021 – Harper Paperbacks

Review book courtesy of the publisher and Nan Rossiter

Description:

Thirty-four-year-old Maeve Lindstrom loves her job at Willow Pond Senior Care. Her older sister Macey thinks Maeve is the only human being on earth who can make working in a nursing home sound like fun. Maeve enjoys being around the sundowners, as she calls them, helping them navigate their senior years—brightening a time that can be, all too often, a lonely, sad stage of life.

Thirty-three-year-old Gage Tennyson—who brings his mischievous yellow Lab, Gus, to whatever restoration job he is working on with Macey’s husband, Ben—loves Maeve with all his heart. He’s a handsome country boy and a true southern gentleman. But as he and Maeve grow closer, they both sense that they haven’t been completely forthcoming about their pasts.

When Maeve realizes Gage might be planning to propose, she knows she must finally be honest with everyone she holds dear. She can no longer live with the secret she’s been dragging around like an anchor, and she knows the only way she will be free to build a lifetime relationship with Gage is to risk everything—including his (and her family’s) love and respect. Before she finds the courage, however, her past comes careening into her life in a shocking and unexpected way.  (publisher)

My take:  With Promises to Keep Nan Rossiter continues the tale of the Lindstrom sisters that began with Promises Of the Heart. That was Macey’s story. Now it’s Maeve’s turn. Maeve is a lovely, compassionate woman who is in love with Gage, a man she can see a future with. Gage is a sensitive, artistic man and he loves Maeve. Sounds like a match made in heaven, right? These two are in their mid30s and have secrets that have a hold on them. When the secrets become known they’ll find out if they can be strong enough for each other. Promises to Keep is all that and more. There are family dynamics, end of life situations, and dreams to pursue. I related to several issues in this book. If that sounds like your kind of novel I recommend you pick up a copy today. I loved it.

Under The Southern Sky

Under the Southern Sky by Kristy Woodson Harvey

Published:  April 2021 – Gallery Books

Review book courtesy of the publisher

Description:

Recently separated Amelia Buxton, a dedicated journalist, never expected that uncovering the biggest story of her career would become deeply personal. But when she discovers that a cluster of embryos belonging to her childhood friend Parker and his late wife Greer have been deemed “abandoned,” she’s put in the unenviable position of telling Parker—and dredging up old wounds in the process.

Parker has been unable to move forward since the loss of his beloved wife three years ago. He has all but forgotten about the frozen embryos, but once Amelia reveals her discovery, he knows that if he ever wants to get a part of Greer back, he’ll need to accept his fate as a single father and find a surrogate.

Each dealing with their own private griefs, Parker and Amelia slowly begin to find solace in one another as they navigate an uncertain future against the backdrop of the pristine waters of their childhood home, Buxton Beach. The journey of self-discovery leads them to an unforgettable and life-changing lesson: Family—the one you’re born into and the one you choose—is always closer than you think.  (publisher)

My take:

Under the Southern Sky was the perfect book to pull me through the waning days of winter and into spring. If feel good southern fiction is what you’re looking for, look no further. Kristy Woodson Harvey’s new novel is the story of Amelia Paxton and Parker Thaysden. They grew up next door to each other and their mothers had high hopes they’d fall in love. Sounds crazy but these southern mamas were bound and determined. Fast forward several years and life has played out differently than any of them imagined. I loved the coastal setting, the families, and Amelia and Parker. This is a story of grief, disappointments, and learning that it’s okay to set your sights on new goals. It might make for a life more amazing than anyone could imagine. Recommended.

Blurbs:

“Harvey (Feels Like Falling) delivers a heart-wrenching tale of love and loss in this tearjerker…Harvey brings her characters to life, including Greer, whose heartbreaking journal entries imagine the family she and Parker would have. These passages are particularly wrenching, making the book’s happy ending all the more moving. Fans of women’s fiction will devour this.”Publishers Weekly (starred review)

“Pack your beach bag, Harvey’s back with another delightful story of the magic of southern coastal towns… As with Mary Kay Andrews or Patti Callahan Henry, Harvey spins romance around well-drawn characters, complete with strengths and weaknesses, and always mindful of the beauty that comes from living in the modern South.”Booklist

“Sometimes the key to new love lies hidden in old friendships. In Under the Southern Sky, Kristy Woodson Harvey stirs up a warm-hearted mix of hometown charm and the sort of thoroughly modern problems that bring us back to the people who know us best and the places that remind us of who we really are.”—Lisa Wingate, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Before We Were Yours and The Book of Lost Friends

“Perfect for: fans of beach reads, P.S. I Love You, and anything by authors Jennifer Weiner and Elin Hilderbrand. A perfect pick for book clubs or a weekend read, Under the Southern Sky follows journalist Amelia as she makes a heart-wrenching discovery that changes everything.”Country Living

“I’ve always been a Kristy Woodson Harvey fan, but she has taken things to a whole new level with Under the Southern Sky, her best novel yet. I laughed, sobbed, and gasped at the story’s clever twists and turns; I couldn’t flip the pages fast enough to see how Amelia’s and Parker’s story turned out. You’ll need plenty of tissues—and maybe some of Cape Carolina’s beloved bourbon-spiked sweet tea—to make it to the end. Deliciously plotted, intricately constructed, gorgeously written, and brimming with hope, Under the Southern Sky will steal your heart and make you think about first loves, second chances, and the unforeseeable twists of fate that guide us all.”—Kristin Harmel, New York Times bestselling author of The Book of Lost Names

”Harvey delivers a fresh and unforgettable portrait of modern parenthood and the thoroughly traditional ways that love continues to conquer all.”—Booktrib

“This is a character-driven (…) romance with a lot of introspection. Recommend to readers of Mary Kay Andrews and Susan Mallery.”Library Journal

“I adore Kristy Woodson Harvey’s writing style—and topics! I always know that I’m getting an immersive, well-written, visually transporting book when I open one of Kristy’s and this is one of her best. And that’s saying a lot!”—Zibby Owens, Moms Don’t Have Time to Read Books

At the Divide, Adequin Rake commands the Argus. She has no resources, no comms—nothing, except for the soldiers that no one wanted. Her ace in the hole could be Cavalon Mercer–genius, asshole, and exiled prince who nuked his grandfather’s genetic facility for “reasons.”

She knows they’re humanity’s last chance.

Dewes went on to serve as cinematographer for independent films, write, produce, and shoot a zombie musical, slay internet dragons, and act as lighting designer for presidents and presidential-hopefuls. Gathering Dark

Gathering Dark by Candice Fox

Gathering Dark is a new standalone thriller set in Los Angeles from #1 New York Times and Globe and Mail bestselling author Candice Fox.

Dr. Blair Harbour, once a wealthy, respected pediatric surgeon, is now an ex-con down on her luck. She’s determined to keep her nose clean and win back custody of her son. But when her former cellmate begs for help to find her missing daughter, Blair is compelled to put her new-found freedom on the line.

Detective Jessica Sanchez has always had a difficult relationship with the LAPD. And her inheritance of a multi-million dollar mansion as a reward for catching a killer has just made her police enemy number one.

It’s been ten years since Jessica arrested Blair for cold-blooded murder. So when Jessica opens the door to the disgraced doctor late one night she expects abuse, maybe even violence. What comes next is a plea for help… (publisher)

My take:

Gathering Dark is a crazy ride of a crime thriller. This is a gritty story of revenge, making amends and second chances. It’s filled with interesting characters, insane situations, and strong, gutsy women – most I couldn’t help but cheer for as they met their challenges. That said, be warned there are vividly violent scenes. Seriously, I was holding my breath and feeling anxious during much of the book – which is why I am surprised by how much I look forward to seeing where Candice Fox takes Jessica and company in the next installment.

Lost, Found, and Forever

Lost, Found and Forever by Victoria Schade

Published:  March 2021 – Berkley

E-galley courtesy of the publisher and NetGalley

Description:

Justine Becker could not be more in love with her rescue dog, Spencer. He’s her best friend and “colleague” at her dog supply store, Tricks & Biscuits, in upstate New York. When she discovers a heartbreaking social media post trying to locate a dog that looks suspiciously like Spencer, Justine realizes that her beloved pup might actually belong to someone else.

Her worst fears are realized when she and Spencer meet up with Brooklyn-based Griffin McCabe, and he wants Spencer back. He claims he is the dog’s rightful owner, and has the paperwork to prove it. But Justine refuses to roll over and let him take Spencer without a fight.

It’s not easy juggling Spencer’s burgeoning new career as a dog actor, along with the demands of her life upstate, all while constantly trying to prove she’s a better pet parent than Griffin. Their not-so-friendly competition teeters on the edge of flat-out hate, so when romantic feelings for Griffin catch Justine off guard, she needs to determine if it’s all part of his plot to win the pup back, or if the guy who was good enough for Spencer might also be good enough for her.  (publisher)

My take:

Justine rescued Spencer, possibly the world’s most adorable dog, and he repaid her by coming to her rescue. There’s nothing she wouldn’t do for him including fight for him when his former owner enters the picture. Just when Justine thinks her world can’t get more dramatic Spencer falls into an acting gig that’s being filmed not far from where said former owner lives. Does this sound like a novel that could be a Hallmark movie? I would watch that movie! Lost, Found & Forever has it all:  attractive humans, adorable dog, and just enough drama to make an interesting escape of a read. I enjoyed it!
