It finally looks like winter in my neck of the woods. Snow arrived on Thursday – only three inches that the wind blew around all night. It’s pretty to look at until it’s not. Those of you who live in the snow belt know what I mean.
So with the weather becoming more wintery I decided to visit my local yarn shop. I’ve been without a project for a few weeks and my fingers were itching to start something new. My friend Sherri blogged about a cowl she was working on. I decided to give it a try while listening to Catch of the Day by Marcia Evanick. It’s been on my iPod for a while and was a fun one to listen to while knitting 🙂
I also read a book from my shelves last week: The Peach Keeper by Sarah Addison Allen. I ♥ her books and will post my review in a few days.

Do you like to listen to audiobooks? If so, do you multitask?
I was very disappointed in The Sugar Queen. Started it, read for sixty pages and gave it up. I very seldom give up on a book so this upset me no end!

Mystica, I wasn’t disappointed with The Sugar Queen but it is the one I enjoyed the least. If you get a chance I hope you’ll try Garden Spells or The Peach Keeper.

I know exactly what you mean about the snow. I gave up trying to clear a path until the wind stopped blowing it around.
I multitask audiobooks all the time. This month’s project is to clean and organize my home office, so I’m listening twice as much as I’m reading.

I love Sarah Addison Allen as well, and I only listen to audios if I am doing something. I always have one going in the car and one at home for when I am doing stuff around the house!

I left for Maryland on the day the snow started. Going through the mountains on the Pennsylvania Turnpike got kind of hairy but on the other side of them it was sunny and no snow just wicked wind. There is no snow here at my son’s house in Maryland. Guess we got a small amount at home. Just so frigid out! Brrr! I have only ever listened to an audiobook in the car and I do like that when traveling. I think I would be too distracted at home. I am reading a vintage mystery right now by Irish author Eilis Dillon. It is excellent. She only wrote 3 mysteries out of 50 books published.

I don’t know how to knot, but I can crochet, and I have never thought about doing it while I was listening to an audiobook, but now I am thinking that would be a great way to kill two birds with one stone! Great idea, and thanks for sharing! Your cowl is beautiful as well!

My grandmother taught me to knit when I was a little girl, or at least she tried to! (I wasn’t very good at it.) Lately I’ve been thinking that one day I’ll give it another shot. I admire those who create such lovely things with their own hands.
Love the winter photo! Just beautiful.

Beth, I learned when I was a Girl Scout and then took a 40 year hiatus, lol. My best friend and I took a refresher class at a local yarn shop a couple of years ago and I’ve really enjoyed my second encounter with knitting 🙂

I have that scarf pattern, too but I used the wrong yarn and have to tear it out and redo it…
I love Sarah Addison Allen…did you know that she is recovering from breast cancer?

Patty, the yarn I’m using is by Plymouth Yarn: Baby Alpaca Grande Tweed. It’s so soft yet chunky. A little more than I intended to pay but when I felt it I didn’t want anything else.
Re: SAA, I subscribe to her newsletter so I was aware of her health issues last year. What a scare! I’m so glad she’s come through it so well.

Your backyard buried under snow is gorgeous! I hear you though about the snow belt and winter! We have barely received 2 inches and my hubby had to go up north to snowmobile! 😀
I guess I didn’t realize that you were a knitter…I feel foolish! That cowl will be absolutely gorgeous!!

Staci, well, I knit but I’m not what I’d call a seasoned knitter 😉 Scarves, throws, baby blankets so far. I hope to take a class in the next year to learn how to knit a sweater for my granddaughter.

I love your back yard. I’m not doing so good on my audio reading, I find it really distracting, obviously I’m doing something wrong, or maybe I’m just too old to learn something new. I’m also loving you cowl. I need to get back to knitting, just not sure when that will happen. I tool love Sarah Addison Allen books, haven’t read the Peach keeper though. Have a great week, keep warm.

Irene, I think if you find an audiobook with a good narrator you’ll be hooked! The voice you listen to makes all the difference.

I love to knit but must concentrate on it. Couldn’t possibly listen to something while I knit. I find as I get older, my powers of concentration are lower. I wish I could knit as I watch television; instead I do crossword puzzles then. I don’t do audiobooks, again because I concentrate on one thing at a time these days.

Hi Mary: Nice shot of your back yard! I’m a knitter too although this winter I haven’t been in the mood (I think my dogs and reading and skiing and blog are absorbing my time). I used to listen to audiobooks and knit – now I mostly listen to audiobooks when I have to drive long distance.
My absolute favorite audiobooks are: The story of Edgar Sawtelle (about the Sawtelle dogs – I was listening to it doing the 200 mile RT drive to my puppy class and The Way the Crow Flies – both long, very poignant books.
Happy Reading, Ruby

That is exactly what it looks like here too. Winter hit with a vengeance this past week. We got about 5 inches of snow maybe but it’s the cold that’s bad. It’s freezing here. If you step out for more than a minute without being covered up you are going to freeze.
Good luck with the knitting. I’ve been busy making myself a heavier scarf and just finished sewing up some socks for Sam. His poor little feet were getting cold today even in his little booties so I’ll add the socks and see if that helps.
Stay warm!
