I visited my parents this week and spent some time scanning old family photos. The couple in this photo are my Dad’s great-aunt and uncle (circa 1900). They owned a farm in Wisconsin. You can click on the photo to enlarge.
Oh how FUN! I love this.

What a lovely couple. Life was so hard for most people back then.

I love these old photos! I’m going to scan the one of my maternal grandparents around the same time period…the clothes and poses are very similar! The men always seemed to be sitting, while the wives stand. But maybe to show off their clothes?
Love it!

I think you’re right about why the man is usually sitting and the woman standing, Laurel-Rain.

I love these old photos too! Your great-great uncle? kinda looks like TBG’s grandfather. He has a pic of his grandparents where they are posed in a similar fashion but his grandmother is nowhere as lovely as your Dad’s great aunt. Shhhh, don’t tell him I said that.

How gorgeous. I was at a play last night, Jane Austen type, and these outfits remind me of those costumes.

I’m loving the old family photos. Photography was such a formal event back then. That does look like a wedding dress. In the photos of my grandmother from the same era she was always wearing something dark.

Oh wow! That photo is indeed wonderful, and I just love that dress! They certainly don’t make wedding dresses like that anymore!

They look absolutely lovely! On one hand I wish that we still dressed fancy like the old days, on the other I’m so glad to be able to walk around town in shorts and a tank top any time I want to. 🙂

What a gorgeous couple. I’m a nut for old portraits! In fact, I collect them. It doesn’t matter that I have no idea who the people in the pictures are, I’m just fascinated by them.

Old pictures are wonderful to look at. What a handsome couple. I’ve often wondered why they seldom smiled in pictures back then. Beautiful picture, Mary.

This is an amazing photo!! when I lived near Shipshewana I used to visit a few antique stores there and picked up several portraits similar to this just because I’m fond of the style and formality of it all. Gorgeous photo!

I LOVE old photographs. After my father died earlier this year, and I had to clean out his house, I took all the old photographs, framed them and hung them up in my re-decorated guest bedroom. I love going in their and looking at all the photographs of my parents, grandparents and even great-grandparents!

I love going through old family photos. It used to be one of my grandmother’s thinngs to do when I visited because I share her love for family history. She can’t see well enough now 😦
