Automattic Worldwide WP 5K – I did it!

I read a post highlighted on my Word Press dashboard last week that interested me. It explained the Worldwide Word Press 5K. Since I’ve been concentrating on getting back in shape I decided to participate. I’m not able to walk on the actual date (April 10) but happily there’s the option of doing it any time between April 4-10.

This morning I jumped in the car and drove through the park near my home (the river in my header photo runs through the park). When the odometer read 1.6 miles (a little more than half  of a 5K) I turned around and drove home, snapped on my pedometer and waited for my walking buddy to arrive. The weather was cloudy and upper 30°s when we started.

50 minutes later we were back at my house. I checked the pedometer: 6573 steps. And since I’m on Weight Watchers Points Plus program I entered my time and pace into my tracker which calculated 5 activity points. Total win!  Weather permitting, we’ve decided to do this walk each week.

The falls at the 1 mile mark

On the path – almost 1.6 mile mark

As you can tell from the photos, Spring hasn’t reached the Milwaukee area yet.  On the bright side, the snow is gone 🙂

Thanks to the folks at Automattic for a great idea – well, I’m certain they have many good ideas – but this is one that connects people, exercise and blogging. There’s still time for others to join in the fun.  Click here for more information.

  1. Way to go! What a beautiful trail you have to walk on. One of my favourite trails in town also passes a waterfall. Nothing energizes me like rushing water!

  2. Way to go Mary! It certainly looks like a beautiful place to walk. I’ve been taking Sammy every morning just in the neighborhood but I can already say that he’ll be instrumental in keeping his mom in shape. lol.

  3. This is a great idea. I’m going on a bird walk Saturday (yes, there is such a thing!) and we definitely walk at least 3 miles. Maybe I can count that?

      • I walked for … ready… four hours! I didn’t have a pedometer but I’m positive it was more than 3 miles. I got enough exercise and fresh air to last me the week! I’ll post something on it tomorrow after I rest up.

  4. Congratulations! I finally started back with my treadmill. Already, not as sluggish.

  5. Bravo! Kudos on the start of a beautiful friendship to a healthy new beginning!

I can’t wait to see the summer rendition of the above. Keep walking and make certain the pedometer keeps ticking 🙂

PS I have to start jogging again… it’s been too long.. yes still running from wall to wall in my basement.

  6. Our snow is gone too!!!!!!! 😀
Looks like a great walk to me..I envy you the nice trail and sidewalk. I live out in the country with nothing but dirt (muddy right now) roads!! Way to go!

  7. It’s nice when you have some scenery to look at while walking. I just do some walking in my neighborhood early morning or not at all – it’s starting to get mighty hot by mid morning to walk- forget about afternoon. It was mid 80’s yesterday afternoon.
